In the quiet expanses of the Namibian, Omani, and Saudi Arabian deserts, some of Earth’s oldest stones are revealing an unexpected secret — tiny, perfectly aligned tunnels etched deep into marble and limestone, structures too regular to be explained by ordinary geological forces alone. What remains mysterious, however, is the identity of the organism that made them. Researchers have so far been unable to recover DNA or identifiable proteins from the tunnel fillings due to their great age — possibly one to two million years old. That leaves open the tantalizing question of whether these lifeforms were known but unusual microbes or representatives of an entirely unknown branch of life.

If confirmed as biological, these ancient tunnels could expand our understanding of how life interacts with hard rock environments — and even inform models of Earth’s early biosphere and carbon cycling.
