Serbian police have uncovered the body of Aleksandar Nesovic, a known figure in organized crime, stuffed inside a barrel buried in Indjija, approximately 40 kilometers northwest of Belgrade. This discovery follows a violent shooting at a restaurant that allegedly involved Belgrade Police Chief Veselin Milic.
Reports indicate that Nesovic's murder occurred during a meeting organized by Milic, intended to resolve disputes with two other individuals. However, the meeting escalated into a deadly confrontation, resulting in Nesovic being shot. He had been missing since the incident, which reportedly took place on May 12-13.
Following the shooting, Milic and three of his bodyguards have faced allegations of complicity, accused of helping the perpetrators cover up the crime. An ongoing investigation has led to inquiries involving up to 10 individuals, including Milic and several restaurant staff members.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has vowed to address corruption within the police force, stating that those implicated in protecting criminals will be removed from their positions. He confirmed that authorities expect the body found matches Nesovic based on clothing.
The autopsy and DNA analysis are forthcoming, as police have also seized multiple mobile phones, laptops, and vehicles linked to the case. The incident has drawn significant media attention, highlighting the troubled relationship between organized crime and law enforcement in Serbia, especially amidst recent high-profile assassinations and waves of violence in the region.
Authorities are under mounting pressure to restore public trust in the police, further complicating an already tense political landscape.
