September 20 Is the Day Most Canadians Share

There are dates that carry their own weight, and dates that slip by almost unnoticed. In the quiet ledger of Canadian birthdays, one date has emerged as the most crowded, the most shared, the one that appears most often on the paperwork of a life. Statistics Canada, looking back across thirty years of live births, has found that September 20 is the most common birthday in the country.

The data, drawn from births between 1995 and 2025, reveals a pattern that is less random than it might first appear. The second most common birthday is September 18, followed by September 25. In fact, sixteen of the twenty most common birthdays fall in September, with July and August also showing higher-than-average numbers. The explanation, when it arrives, feels almost inevitable: September babies are, in a statistical sense, Christmas and New Year’s babies. Subtract the average human gestation period of about 267 days from September 20, and you land on December 28—right in the middle of the holiday season.

At the other end of the list, the least common birthdays are less about biology and more about calendars and culture. February 29 ranks last, as it occurs only once every four years. After that, the three least common days are Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day—dates when hospitals, like the rest of the world, operate on a quieter schedule.

Even Canada Day, July 1, is a relatively uncommon birthday, ranking 332nd. There is something quietly fascinating in these numbers: the ways that human intimacy, medical scheduling, and the rhythms of the calendar leave their marks on the distribution of something as personal as a birthday.

For most Canadians, the date they celebrate is not the date the statistics say is most likely. But the data offers a small, unasked-for glimpse into the shared patterns of a country—a reminder that even in something as individual as the day we were born, there are forces at work that connect us.
