Authorities have suspended the search for Erica Fox, a 55-year-old triathlete from Pebble Beach, who went missing during a swim off Lovers Point on December 21, 2025. Fox was part of a group of swimmers when she disappeared shortly after noon, amidst reports of a possible shark sighting in the area.
Witness accounts have raised concerns that she may have encountered a shark during her swim. Two onlookers reported seeing a shark breach the water "with what appeared to be a human body in its mouth," though authorities have clarified that there is no concrete evidence linking the sighting directly to Fox's disappearance. Pacific Grove Police Department Commander Brian Anderson noted, “Based on witness statements, we believe a shark was involved.”
The search operation commenced almost immediately, involving multiple agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard and local law enforcement. They covered over 84 square nautical miles in a grueling 15-hour search but were unable to locate Fox. Around 7 p.m. on December 22, the search was officially called off. Fox was a seasoned ocean swimmer and co-founder of the Kelp Krawlers swimming group. Her father, James Fox, shared his shock and sadness, describing how she was participating in something she loved. The group typically enjoyed swimming to a buoy in Monterey Bay and regrouping afterward for social gatherings.
Local beaches, including Lovers Point, McAbee, and San Carlos, will remain closed in light of the incident.
