Search and Rescue Underway in Grand Canyon After Devastating Flash Flood Leaves Over 20 Missing

A massive search and rescue operation is underway in Grand Canyon National Park after a sudden, torrential downpour triggered severe flash flooding, leaving more than 20 people missing and dozens of hikers stranded throughout the inner gorge.

Emergency responders, including National Park Service (NPS) rangers, Arizona Department of Public Safety personnel, and National Guard aviation units, are working against the clock to locate the unaccounted-for individuals.

The disaster struck late yesterday afternoon when localized, heavy monsoon rains dumped excessive moisture over the region in less than two hours. The sudden deluge quickly overwhelmed narrow side canyons, sending wall-like surges of muddy water, boulders, and debris tearing toward the Colorado River corridor.

Several backcountry commercial rafting groups and day-hikers near popular trails, including Bright Angel and Havasu Creek areas, were directly in the path of the fast-moving torrents. Witnesses described hearing a thunderous roar before a wave of churning brown water swept through temporary campsites and trail sections.

"The water rose several feet in a matter of seconds. Camp gear, kayaks, and people were swept down river before anyone could react," reported one survivor evacuated from a river bank overnight. Extremely rugged terrain and severed communication lines are complicating response efforts. National Park Service helicopters are utilizing forward-looking infrared sensors to scan riverbanks and cliff ledges where stranded survivors may have sought refuge.

Emergency operations are moving swiftly as over 30 individuals have been successfully airlifted to safety, with several receiving medical treatment for hypothermia and minor injuries. On the water, swiftwater rescue specialists are actively navigating the main stem of the Colorado River in specialized motorized rafts to search for remaining survivors. To ensure public safety and prevent further casualties, park authorities have officially closed multiple inner-canyon campgrounds and backcountry trails until further notice.

National Park Service officials advise visitors to strictly monitor local radar warnings and avoid inner-canyon hiking during active flash flood alerts. The search operation remains active and ongoing as additional rescue teams mobilize at the South Rim staging area.
