Science Under Strain — The FDA’s Crisis of Confidence after a Leader Walked Away

A hush descended over the corridors of the FDA this week — not the quiet of calm, but the uneasy stillness that comes when people wonder who will still be left when the doors reopen. The departure of one of its most experienced scientists has stirred fears that the institution’s foundations may be cracking, even as the world awaits the next wave of new medicines.

Richard Pazdur — a 26-year veteran of the FDA and a pillar of its cancer-drug review process — announced his retirement just weeks after being appointed head of the agency’s largest division, the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER). His exit came amid clashes with senior leadership over a controversial expedited drug-approval program and staffing reshuffles.

Pazdur’s departure is more than symbolic. This was the division responsible for evaluating most of the prescription and over-the-counter medicines used in the United States — the gatekeeper between promising research and everyday patients. As the founding director of the agency’s oncology center, Pazdur had shaped how cancer drugs came to market, balancing speed with trust, and advocating for rigorous standards.

But under the current leadership of Marty Makary, the agency pushed a fast-track approval path for “national priority” drugs, and began replacing career regulators with hand-picked appointees. Those changes, critics say, undermined the careful deliberation that made FDA decisions globally trusted. Pazdur reportedly balked at removing experienced staff and questioned whether the expedited path could maintain safety standards.

With Pazdur gone, the agency has lost yet another veteran from its senior ranks — on top of other recent departures. Observers warn that this level of turnover threatens to erode institutional memory, slow down drug reviews, and weaken public confidence in FDA’s ability to safeguard health.

Inside the industry and among public-health experts, unease is growing. Some view Pazdur’s rise — and sudden fall — as emblematic of deeper structural problems: conflicting priorities between speed and safety, politics versus science, and short-term gains over long-term stability. For patients waiting on promising therapies, the human cost may be unseen but real: delays, uncertainty, or worse, diminished trust in the gatekeeper meant to protect them.

Yet, outside public statements still frame the agency as stable — and leaders insist the changes are part of a broader effort to modernize and streamline. But as the sun sets on one era at the FDA, many are asking quietly: can it still stand firm on science — or will the storm of turnover leave it unsteady?

In simple terms: the departure of a veteran cancer-drug regulator from a critical leadership post has triggered serious questions about the stability, direction, and reliability of the FDA in a moment when trust and scientific integrity matter more than ever.
