Saudi Arabia overturns death sentence for man over Facebook comment, Sri Lanka says

Sri Lankan Deputy Foreign Minister Arun Hemachandra said Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court set aside the death sentence on Wednesday. Anojan Sivarasa, a 27-year-old Sri Lankan migrant worker, was sentenced to death in September after an appeals court convicted him of blasphemy over a Tamil-language Facebook comment. He had deleted the comment and posted an apology. Sri Lanka’s government had pursued diplomatic efforts to secure clemency. It remains unclear whether Sivarasa will face further proceedings or how long he will remain in detention.
