Sana'a, Yemen—Armed assailants raided a prominent currency exchange office in central Sana'a today, shooting a facility security guard before fleeing the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash. The daylight robbery triggered widespread panic in the surrounding commercial district as shopkeepers scrambled for cover behind closed storefronts. Emergency medical units arrived shortly after to treat the wounded guard.
First responders stabilized the guard at the scene before transferring him to a nearby hospital in the capital. Medical personnel reported the victim suffered a gunshot wound to the upper torso and remains in serious condition inside the trauma ward.
According to local security desk reports, masked gunmen pulled up outside the exchange facility on motorcycles and stormed the main entrance with automatic rifles. When the stationed guard attempted to draw his sidearm and engage the intruders, one of the gunmen fired at close range, neutralizing him immediately.
"Two shots echoed down the street, and then people started screaming and running out of the building," said an electronics shop employee working across the street. "The attackers sped off down a side alley within ninety seconds."
Forensic investigators cordoned off the currency exchange to collect spent shell casings, examine bullet impacts on the glass counter, and review internal security camera footage. Investigators believe the perpetrators monitored the location's daily cash delivery schedules prior to launching the targeted assault.
The robbery underscores growing concerns regarding economic instability and violent property crime across major urban centers. Currency exchange houses across the capital have increasingly become high-risk targets due to large physical cash reserves held on site.
Security forces established temporary checkpoints along major transit avenues leading out of the neighborhood, stopping commercial vehicles and inspecting motorcycle riders. Local business associations urged authorities to step up armed patrols around financial institutions to deter secondary attacks.
Police units continue to analyze surveillance tapes and interview eyewitnesses as the search for the escaped gunmen expands across surrounding city sectors.
