Russians Lured Into Joining the Army With Promises of Free Education at Top University

Moscow’s Higher School of Economics has launched a program offering funded university study to 100 people who sign military contracts. Recruits can join Russia’s Unmanned Systems Forces or the BARS-Moscow volunteer unit, which handles air defense duties around the capital. The university says service will last one year and some assignments will be away from the front. However, Russian law allows contracts to be extended during mobilization, and critics warn recruits may not be guaranteed discharge or a particular military role.
