Ukraine has nearly exhausted its locomotive reserve after repeated Russian strikes on the railway network, according to officials cited by the Financial Times. Kyiv is negotiating with European partners for additional rolling stock compatible with its 1,520-millimeter track gauge. More than 500 locomotives have reportedly been damaged or destroyed since Russia’s full-scale invasion, with over half lost in 2026. The shortage is threatening port logistics and could hinder exports of grain, iron ore, and goods even as Black Sea shipping resumes.
