Russia’s Cosmos 2612 made a series of close approaches to ICEYE-X36, a U.S.-operated commercial imaging satellite, between October 15 and 19, according to space-tracking company LeoLabs. The Russian spacecraft came within 500 meters and maneuvered ahead of and behind its target. Experts described the encounter as an unprecedented uncoordinated rendezvous between active satellites. ICEYE-X36 is believed to support Ukraine, although the company has not publicly confirmed its specific customers. The satellite’s intent remains unclear, but analysts warn such maneuvers could pose risks in orbit.
