Kharkiv, Ukraine— A Russian drone tore into a residential apartment block in Kharkiv just after midnight on October 31, 2026, injuring three civilians and setting off a fire that burned for more than an hour.
The building sits in a dense northern neighborhood that has taken repeated hits. Witnesses said they heard the low buzz first. Then the blast. Windows blew out three floors up. Smoke filled the stairwell. One resident said the whole frame shook.
City officials said two of the wounded were taken to hospital with shrapnel injuries. The third was treated at the scene. All were listed as civilians with no military connection to the building. The strike left a gaping hole in the facade and scattered concrete across the street.
Kharkiv’s mayor confirmed the attack shortly after 1 a.m. He said air defenses had been active over the city and that emergency teams were on site within minutes. Power was cut to two adjacent blocks as a precaution. Gas lines were checked for leaks.
The regional military administration said the weapon was a long-range attack drone. It said debris from the drone was recovered and would be examined. No other impacts were reported inside the city limits during that window, though alerts continued until 2:30 a.m.
Inside the building, neighbors pulled people out. A man in his 60s was carried down on a blanket. A woman stood barefoot in the courtyard holding a child, both covered in dust. Firefighters worked floor by floor with thermal cameras, shouting for anyone trapped.
This is the third time this month that residential blocks in Kharkiv have been hit. The city remains within range of Russian launch sites across the border. Residents keep tape on their windows. Many sleep in hallways when sirens sound. They say they have no choice.
Police investigators sealed the site at first light. They photographed the crater in the living room where the drone entered. They collected fragments for a war crimes file. The building manager said 18 apartments were now uninhabitable.
Officials said structural engineers would assess the block today. Residents were told not to return until clearance. The air raid alert system was tested again this morning.
