Russia Wants to Destabilize Europe’s Entire Political Order, Not Just Ukraine

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned that Russia’s ambitions extend beyond Ukraine, accusing Moscow of seeking to destabilize Europe’s political order. In an interview with Bloomberg, Merz said Europeans underestimate Russia’s influence and its opposition to democracy, open societies and European integration. He said Germany and other European allies are increasing defense efforts and supporting Kyiv, despite the budgetary burden. Merz argued Europe must become capable of defending itself independently within NATO, while continuing aid to Ukraine until the war ends.
