Russia to Lead BRICS Payment Revolution: A New Global Shift Begins October 2025

Starting in October 2025, Russia is set to officially begin using the BRICS payment system, marking a historic step toward financial independence from Western-controlled platforms like SWIFT. This move signifies the early rollout of a decentralized and sovereign financial infrastructure among BRICS nations — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — with more member states expected to join soon.

At the heart of this transition lies the concept of BRICS Pay, a digital system enabling instant international settlements among members. It aims to streamline cross-border trade, reduce currency conversion costs, and strengthen economic cooperation under a multi-polar world order. The initiative also aligns with the mBridge project (BRICS Bridge) — a joint venture exploring multi-CBDC (central bank digital currency) integration for faster, transparent, and borderless transactions.

Through BRICS Pay, users could eventually make payments across member states using digital wallets, QR codes, and interoperable national currencies. The platform’s architecture suggests deep collaboration among central banks to build an mCBDC framework, providing a unified digital backbone for trade and finance.

Analysts view this as a direct response to global sanctions and the growing push for de-dollarization. With the U.S. dollar still dominating global reserves and settlements, BRICS aims to create a new sovereign digital standard anchored in collective currency strength and shared blockchain infrastructure.

Furthermore, experts propose linking this new system to an eSDR (electronic Special Drawing Rights) model — a digital reimagining of the IMF’s reserve asset. When harmonized with CBDCs, an eSDR structure could allow BRICS to balance global liquidity, issue digital bonds, and conduct cross-border settlements without Western intermediaries.

If successful, this shift would mark the dawn of a new international monetary era, where global power tilts toward emerging economies with shared financial sovereignty. As Russia initiates the launch, the rest of the BRICS nations are expected to follow, paving the way for a fully digital, de-dollarized financial ecosystem by the late 2020s.
