Russia’s largest oil refinery stops processing after Ukraine’s 3,000-km strike

Russia’s largest oil refinery in Omsk stopped processing after being hit by a Ukrainian drone strike reported as one of Kyiv’s deepest attacks since the full-scale invasion.

The refinery—one of Russia’s most important gasoline producers—reportedly suffered damage severe enough to suspend crude processing. Reuters, citing industry sources, said the attack caused a fire at key refining facilities and that the refinery halted operations as crews assessed damage and repair work began. Russian officials later confirmed that facilities at the Omsk site were damaged, while saying no plant personnel were injured.

The strike underscored Ukraine’s expanded long-range capabilities and came deep inside Russia, with reporting describing the flight distance as roughly 3,000 km. Ukrainian leaders and military officials highlighted the attack as a blow to Russia’s oil economy and an effort to reduce the resources available to sustain the war.

Concerns followed quickly about downstream effects, including potential shortages of fuel supplies as the largest producer in the sector processes less or pauses output, pushing disruption into Russia’s domestic distribution system.
