Russia’s Justice Ministry has designated the independent online outlet Novaya Gazeta as a “foreign agent,” subjecting it to restrictive reporting and labeling requirements. The move adds to a widening campaign against independent journalism, particularly outlets that report critically on the Kremlin and the war in Ukraine. Novaya Gazeta has faced repeated pressure, while journalists and editors working in exile remain vulnerable to fines, criminal cases, and asset seizures.
