Russia Labels Independent Outlet Novaya Gazeta a “Foreign Agent”

Russia’s Justice Ministry has designated the independent online outlet Novaya Gazeta as a “foreign agent,” subjecting it to restrictive reporting and labeling requirements. The move adds to a widening campaign against independent journalism, particularly outlets that report critically on the Kremlin and the war in Ukraine. Organizations on the register must identify themselves publicly and disclose financial information.
