Waterford, Ireland— Multiple families were displaced and one resident was hospitalized after a rowhome structure blaze broke out in Waterford on October 22, 2026.
The fire started at 6:45 a.m. in a mid-terrace house on a tightly packed street near the city center. Flames took hold in the ground-floor living room and raced up the stairwell. The roof caught within minutes. Smoke poured into adjoining houses through party walls and attics.
Six people were inside the house of origin. Five got out through the back door. One elderly woman, 74, was trapped upstairs by smoke and had to be rescued from a bedroom window by neighbors using a ladder. She suffered smoke inhalation and burns to her hands.
Waterford City Fire Brigade sent four engines and a turntable ladder. They found three houses involved, with flames breaking through two roofs. The terraces share a continuous attic space with no fire breaks, allowing rapid spread. Crews fought the fire from inside and from above, pulling ceilings to stop hidden fire travel.
“The fire was in the roof void across three properties before we arrived. These old terraces are notorious for quick spread,” said a fire officer. “We had to open up roofs to get at it.”
The injured woman was taken to University Hospital Waterford. Doctors listed her as stable with moderate smoke inhalation and burns. No other injuries were reported. Around 12 people from four houses were evacuated and taken to a nearby community center.
The city council has found temporary accommodation for three families. Their homes suffered smoke and water damage and have no power. One family said they lost everything on the ground floor. “We woke to banging on the door. The house next door was a fireball,” said a neighbor.
Gardaí closed the street for six hours. Forensic fire investigators examined the scene. Early indication is an electrical fault in a living room socket behind a sofa, but samples have been taken for lab analysis.
The houses remain sealed and cordoned. ESB Networks cut power to the terrace. The council will assess structural damage. The investigation continues. The displaced families are being supported by community welfare.
