“Roots of Unity, Branches of Hope: UMNO’s Grand Collaboration Proposal”

In the corridors of political gatherings, the air often carries a mixture of hope, history, and ambition — like the scent of rain on parched earth that hints at renewal while stirring memories of the long dry season. At a time when alliances shift like shadows with the setting sun, a proposal to unify voices under one roof can seem both familiar and yet profoundly consequential. Such was the tone at the recent UMNO general assembly, where ideas of cooperation and shared identity emerged not as abrupt rupture but as a reflective appeal to a broader sense of community and purpose.

On January 17, 2026, UMNO president and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi set out an ambitious vision to form what he called a “grand collaboration” of Malay‑ and Muslim‑based political parties in Malaysia. The proposal, announced on the closing day of the party’s 2025 general assembly in Kuala Lumpur, aims to bring together the struggles and interests of multiple parties within a loose, informal framework that avoids dissolving individual party identities.

Zahid described the initiative as a platform for shared dialogue and cooperation “under one roof” — where differences in party colours could be set aside in pursuit of common goals relating to Islam and the Malay community. He stressed that the collaboration would not function as a formal political coalition and that members would retain their organisational independence.

Importantly, Zahid assured that this grand collaboration is not designed to undermine the existing unity government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He explicitly told delegates and the prime minister that there was no intention of using the proposal to “topple” or destabilise the current administration.

To clarify its distinct character, Zahid also noted that the collaboration would not revive Muafakat Nasional, a previous cooperation pact between UMNO and PAS. Instead, the “grand collaboration” is meant to transcend older arrangements and include broader engagement with Malay‑Muslim parties and groups, continuing informal discussions with several leaders.

Delegates at the assembly responded with enthusiasm, rising in applause at Zahid’s call for unity. Party leaders also signalled preliminary openness toward further talks, even as details — such as which parties might formally participate or how the entity might operate — were still to be worked out.

Mr. Zahid’s appeal for a “grand collaboration” reflects a moment of introspection in Malaysian politics: a bid to find common ground amid fragmentation, and to weave narratives of shared identity without disrupting the fragile balance of power. Whether this informal platform will translate into concrete political outcomes remains to be seen, but what is certain is that the conversation about unity — under many roofs — has taken a distinct new shape.
