Romanian Court Orders Former Presidential Candidate Călin Georgescu to House Arrest

Romanian court ruled that Călin Georgescu, the pro-Russian former frontrunner in the country’s cancelled 2024 presidential election, should be transferred from police custody to house arrest for 30 days. Prosecutors allege that Georgescu and two other suspects persuaded a businessman to pay €1.1 million by promising to help secure a credit line of up to €15 million from a foreign financial institution. Georgescu denies wrongdoing, and the ruling can be appealed. He is also facing trial in two separate cases.
