PATTANI, Thailand — Security forces sealed off parts of Panare district in Thailand’s southern Pattani province late on Thursday evening, September 10, 2026 following a roadside improvised explosive device (IED) detonation directly opposite a public gas station.
The blast occurred around 7:50 p.m. in the Khuan sub-district. The bomb was planted on the roadside across from the Palas branch of a PTT service station, placing it in close proximity to both the Chanthanarak police outpost and the Khuan sub-district administrative organization’s office. The explosion rattled nearby residential areas and sent shockwaves through the commercial corridor.
Immediately following the detonation, officers from the Mayo Police Station, along with local defense volunteers and military personnel, rushed to establish a security perimeter. Authorities shut down adjacent traffic routes and established strict cordons to facilitate sweep operations and safeguard against potential secondary explosive devices aimed at first responders.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units and forensic investigators were dispatched to the scene to conduct safety checks, gather physical evidence, and determine the composition of the explosive device. Officials are surveying the immediate area for structural damage and assessing whether the blast resulted in any casualties.
Local authorities have urged residents and motorists to avoid the blast zone entirely, observe all police checkpoints, and report any suspicious unattended packages or objects. Investigations into the motive and perpetrators behind the attack remain ongoing.
Security patrols across Pattani and neighboring deep south provinces have since been elevated to high alert, with military units reinforcing security checkpoints along main transit arteries. Regional commanders suspect local insurgent groups orchestrated the coordinated scare tactic to challenge state authority and destabilize the surrounding economic zone during peak evening hours.
Preliminary forensic sweeps overnight recovered metal fragments, wiring, and battery remnants indicative of a radio-controlled or timed pressure-plate mechanism. Regional police officials announced that surveillance footage from nearby commercial establishments is actively being reviewed to trace suspicious vehicle movements prior to the detonation, while specialized dog units continue scanning neighboring fields for additional concealed hazards.
