Belgium is set to introduce a nationwide road vignette system, making a digital road tax sticker mandatory for drivers on both motorways and regional roads starting 1 May 2027.
Under the plan, motorists will be able to choose from different validity periods, including a one-day option, a 10-day option, a two-month option, and an annual pass. The annual price is expected to vary according to vehicle CO2 emissions, ranging from €90 to €125.
The requirement will apply to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, whether registered in Belgium or driving through from abroad. Organisers say the purpose is to ensure all road users contribute to the maintenance of Belgium’s road network, including foreign drivers.
Belgian mobility group Touring has welcomed the move for creating a single system across the country, saying it would be difficult to justify different rules across the three regions. Touring also called for close scrutiny of the final cost to drivers and said revenues should be ring-fenced for maintaining and improving road infrastructure.
