River Collision Tragedy: Twenty Two Dead After Two Passenger Boats Collide Along Congoleese Waterway Route

Mbandaka, Democratic Republic of the Congo—At least twenty two people died on Monday when two overcrowded passenger boats collided on a major river channel in the northwestern territory. The impact shattered the wooden hulls of both vessels, sending dozens of passengers and cargo bags plunging into the dark, fast-moving current. Survivors clung to floating timber and cargo drums while local fishermen rushed out in dugout canoes to pull people from the water.

Local police confirmed that neither vessel carried adequate safety equipment or life jackets for the number of passengers onboard. Rescue operations struggled against strong river currents and fading daylight as volunteers searched the banks downstream from the impact site. Divers waded through the shallows near the river bends where floating debris accumulated during the evening hours.

"Continuous heavy rains over the past week raised the river level significantly, creating treacherous currents and severely reducing visibility for navigating boats," said a regional civil defense coordinator stationed at the port. "Our teams are combing the riverbanks downstream, but the murky water makes finding missing passengers extremely difficult."

Families gathered along the muddy riverbank shouting names of missing relatives as local authorities began tallying survivors brought ashore by rescue boats. Improvised morgues were set up near the landing dock as bodies recovered from the current were wrapped in plastic sheets. Transport ministry inspectors questioned surviving crew members about the speed and lighting conditions of the vessels prior to the crash.

Commercial traffic along the river stretch was halted while patrol boats scanned the surface for additional bodies and floating wreckage. Community leaders criticized lax enforcement of passenger limits on commercial river routes operating outside major urban centers. Officials noted that night navigation remained a persistent hazard despite repeated bans on after-dark transport.

Rescue workers continued using flashlights along the reedy banks as the search stretched into the late evening hours. Local authorities promised an official inquiry into river safety protocols once the primary search operation concluded. The riverfront remained crowded with anxious onlookers waiting for news of uncounted passengers.
