Ripple and Mastercard's RLUSD Pilot: The Multi-Trillion Dollar Connection That's Set to Redefine Global Settlement on the XRP Ledger

Ripple, in partnership with global payments giant Mastercard, WebBank, and Gemini, has launched a pilot program to use the regulated stablecoin RLUSD for settling credit card transactions on the XRP Ledger (XRPL). This groundbreaking move is the latest in a series of strategic collaborations between Ripple and the $9.7 trillion-transacting Mastercard, signaling a significant push for institutional blockchain adoption to bring near-instant, efficient settlement to the traditional finance world.

Ripple and Mastercard's RLUSD Pilot: The Multi-Trillion Dollar Connection That's Set to Redefine Global Settlement on the XRP Ledger

Mastercard and Ripple: The Next Chapter The relationship between Ripple and Mastercard is deepening, transitioning from high-level dialogue to real-world infrastructure deployment. The newly announced pilot program, revealed at Ripple Swell 2025, will explore using RLUSD (Ripple USD)—a regulated, US dollar-backed stablecoin issued by Ripple—to settle fiat card transactions on the XRP Ledger (XRPL). This initiative is a four-way collaboration involving: Ripple: Providing the regulated stablecoin (RLUSD) and the underlying blockchain infrastructure (XRPL). Mastercard: Leveraging its global payments network to facilitate the test. WebBank: The issuer of the Gemini Credit Card, who will use RLUSD for settlement. Gemini: The crypto exchange, whose credit card transactions will form the basis of the pilot. The primary goal is to compress the multi-day settlement cycles common in traditional card payments into near-real-time transactions using the speed and efficiency of the XRPL. This marks one of the first times a regulated U.S. bank (WebBank) will test settling traditional card payments using a regulated stablecoin on a public blockchain. A History of Strategic Alignment This latest partnership does not happen in a vacuum, but rather builds on a clear pattern of strategic alignment between the two finance giants: Keynote Speakers at Swell: Mastercard has demonstrated its commitment to the blockchain space by having its executives speak as keynote speakers at Ripple's flagship Swell conference in both 2022 and 2025. CBDC Partner Program (2023): Ripple was selected to join Mastercard's Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) Partner Program in 2023, positioning it as a key technological provider for future digital currency infrastructure. BIS Taskforce: Both companies also sit together on the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) "Cross-border payments interoperability and extension (PIE) Taskforce," actively shaping the future of global payment standards. The Potential Impact on RLUSD and the XRP Ledger The involvement of Mastercard, the second-largest card network in the world, which transacted $9.7 Trillion in 2024, represents a massive potential utility for both RLUSD and the XRP Ledger. By integrating RLUSD into a system that handles trillions of dollars in volume, Ripple is demonstrating a clear path for its stablecoin to become a foundational settlement layer in mainstream financial operations. For the XRP Ledger, this pilot further solidifies its utility as a high-speed, low-cost platform for institutional settlement, moving beyond niche applications and directly into one of the largest segments of global finance: credit card payments. This move reinforces the narrative that significant background work is culminating in major real-world adoption for the XRP Ledger ecosystem.
