Ripple has officially announced its acquisition of Toronto-based stablecoin payments platform Rail for $200 million, marking a major strategic push to solidify Ripple’s role as a leading player in global payment infrastructure. The acquisition, expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2025 pending regulatory approvals, will allow Ripple to integrate Rail’s cutting-edge payments technology into its own growing XRP-powered ecosystem.
Rail currently processes an estimated 10% of global stablecoin payment volume. This is particularly significant as the stablecoin market has grown rapidly, with estimates suggesting a total market value of over $279 billion. Rail’s platform enables 24/7 real-time payment capabilities, providing powerful features such as virtual accounts, automated treasury workflows, and deep integration with global banking systems—all through a seamless API-based experience. These services reduce complexity for enterprises and institutions while allowing them to leverage Ripple’s native assets like XRP and RLUSD, without directly managing crypto custody or liquidity.
The acquisition comes as Ripple accelerates its stablecoin strategy. Earlier in 2025, Ripple also acquired crypto prime broker Hidden Road for $1.25 billion, part of over $3 billion in total acquisitions this year. This latest move significantly enhances Ripple’s infrastructure for stablecoin issuance, settlement, and global on/off-ramping. Notably, Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin—launched in late 2024—has already reached a market cap of over $600 million, further cementing Ripple’s growing dominance in compliant, institution-focused crypto finance.
With regulatory frameworks such as the U.S. GENIUS Act paving the way for broader institutional use of stablecoins, Ripple’s acquisition of Rail strategically positions the company at the heart of the financial system’s digital transformation. Rail's network of partner banks, compliance standards, and automation infrastructure provide Ripple with a direct connection to the financial rails used by fintechs, banks, and large enterprises globally. This acquisition not only strengthens Ripple’s ecosystem, but also expands the reach of the XRP Ledger into mission-critical, real-world payment flows.
As Ripple continues to build out its payments and tokenization infrastructure, the acquisition of Rail represents a decisive step in linking traditional finance with blockchain efficiency—firmly placing XRP and RLUSD at the center of future global money movement.
