Rio Carjacking Turns Deadly: One Killed in Shootout as Armed Gang Targets Driver, Police Respond

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil— Rio de Janeiro police sealed off a busy avenue in the northern zone Thursday afternoon after an armed carjacking attempt collapsed into a close-range shootout, leaving one man dead on the asphalt beside his own car.

The attack happened at 1:15 p.m. on Avenida Dom Hélder Câmara in Cachambi. Two men on a motorcycle pulled alongside a white Toyota Corolla stopped at a traffic light. One jumped off, tapped the driver's window with a pistol, and ordered him out. The driver, later identified as a 38-year-old off-duty military police officer, drew his own weapon.

Witnesses told police the two men fired almost simultaneously. The officer was struck in the arm. The armed suspect, identified as a 22-year-old with prior robbery arrests, was hit in the chest and neck and collapsed in the middle lane. Traffic stopped. Drivers left their cars and ran. The second suspect fled on the motorcycle.

Paramedics from SAMU arrived within eight minutes. The suspected carjacker was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer was taken to Hospital Salgado Filho in stable condition. Police said his service weapon was legally registered and he acted in self-defense.

"This avenue is marked. Every day we have motorcycles circling cars," said Lt. Col. Marcelo Moreira of the 3rd BPM. "Today the criminal picked the wrong car. But next time it could be a family. We cannot normalize this level of armed robbery in daylight."

O Globo reported that carjackings in Rio's north zone have risen 18 percent this year, with most linked to gangs that resell vehicles or use them in other crimes. Reuters noted that the area around Cachambi sits between two communities controlled by rival criminal factions, making police pursuit difficult.

Forensics marked eight shell casings. The dead suspect's pistol was a .38 revolver with a filed-off serial number. A backpack found nearby contained a second magazine and a screwdriver used to start stolen cars. Police recovered the motorcycle 600 meters away, abandoned.

Residents watched from balconies as officers worked. A bus driver who saw the shootout said he ducked behind his wheel. "I heard pops, then people screaming. Everyone thought it was fireworks until we saw the body," he said.

Military Police said the second suspect was tracked via cameras to the Jacarezinho favela. A search operation was launched Thursday evening with no arrest by nightfall. The officer who survived is expected to give a formal statement Friday.
