Residents Evacuated as Morning Fire Blazes Through Mermaid Waters Apartment Complex

Mermaid Waters, QLD — Dozens of residents were forced to flee their homes on Tuesday morning; September 8, 2026 after a sudden fire broke out inside a multi-story apartment complex in the heart of Mermaid Waters.

Emergency services were called to the property shortly after 6:30 AM following multiple calls from alarmed neighbours reporting thick, dark smoke pouring from a upper-floor unit.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) dispatched multiple crews to the scene. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke filling the upper corridors of the complex. Fire crews immediately initiated a primary search of the structure while working to contain the blaze to its origin point.

Police officers on the scene assisted with the urgent evacuation of the building. Dazed evacuees in sleepwear huddled on the street below, looking up as fire crews worked frantically to extinguish the upper-floor blaze.

"We heard the fire alarms start sounding, and within minutes someone was knocking loudly on the doors telling us to get out immediately," said one resident, who managed to escape with his family and pet dog. "You could smell the plastic burning as soon as you stepped into the hallway."

It took fire crews roughly 40 minutes to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading to adjacent residential units. Paramedics evaluated several occupants on-site for potential smoke inhalation, though no severe injuries or hospitalizations have been reported.

While the affected unit sustained heavy interior damage, quick intervention by responders prevented catastrophic structural loss to the rest of the building.

Authorities have established a perimeter around the area, and fire investigators remain on scene to determine the exact cause of the ignition. Early reports suggest the incident may have been triggered by an electrical fault, though official inquiries are ongoing.

Affected residents are receiving assistance from local disaster recovery services as inspectors evaluate whether undamaged units are safe for re-entry later today.
