Residential Fire In Incheon Multi-Family Unit Kills Two, Injures Neighbors, Destroys Homes

Incheon, South Korea— Faulty heating equipment set off a fire inside a multi-family housing unit in Incheon on October 24, 2026, killing two people and forcing a dozen others into the street.

The call came in just after 3 a.m. from a neighbor who saw smoke pouring from a second-floor window. The building is a three-story walk-up with six units, common in older districts of Bupyeong. Flames had already taken hold in one apartment and were spreading through the ceiling void.

Firefighters arrived in six minutes. They found the stairwell filled with thick smoke. Two victims were inside the unit of origin, near the heater. One was pronounced dead at the scene. The second died en route to hospital. Officials said both appeared to have been overcome while trying to escape.

Four other residents were treated for smoke inhalation. One firefighter suffered minor burns. Crews knocked down the main fire in 40 minutes but stayed to vent smoke and check for extension. The unit was gutted. Two neighboring units suffered heavy smoke damage.

A preliminary inspection pointed to an electric oil heater with a damaged cord and blocked vent. "The device was close to bedding and the safety cutoff failed," a fire investigator said. The Korea Electrical Safety Corporation was asked to test the unit in its lab.

The building had no central fire alarm system, only individual battery detectors. One detector was missing its battery. Residents said the landlord had promised an upgrade last winter. City housing inspectors are now pulling maintenance records.

The victims were a man in his 60s and a woman in her 50s living together. Neighbors described them as quiet and kept to themselves. The district office arranged temporary housing in a community center and offered funeral assistance.

Incheon has seen a rise in heating-related fires as temperatures dropped early this year. Fire authorities have logged 27 such cases in October alone, many involving old portable heaters in semi-basement and multi-family homes.

The investigation will determine whether negligence applies and whether the heater maker faces a product defect review. The site remains sealed off by police tape.
