Rare footage reveals elusive Arctic bobtail squid mom with clutch of eggs

Researchers captured rare video of an Arctic bobtail squid (Rossia moelleri) in the North Atlantic, including a mature female tending a clutch of eggs. The sighting occurred in Northeast Greenland National Park during a Polar BLAST expedition, when a remotely operated underwater vehicle recorded the squid at roughly 50 meters depth in water near −1.6°C. Cephalopods such as squid and octopus are key predators and prey, so documenting reproduction in such a cold, understudied habitat helps build baselines for tracking Arctic ecosystem resilience as warming accelerates.
