Rainy Highway Wreck: Commuter Van Overturns On Slippery Northern Highway In Thailand

Chiang Mai, Thailand—A passenger commuter van lost traction on a rain-slicked curved section of Route 11 early Thursday, sliding sideways before overturning onto its roof. Highway police and emergency medical teams arrived at the scene shortly after five o'clock during heavy monsoon downpours. First responders extracted ten injured passengers from the crumpled passenger compartment and transferred them to regional facilities.

The public transport van was completing a regional morning commuter run when the driver lost control on the wet asphalt. The vehicle struck a concrete drainage curb along the shoulder, causing it to flip twice before coming to rest upside down across the left travel lane.

Local rescue volunteers used hydraulic prying tools to force open jammed sliding doors and free passengers pinned inside. Paramedics evaluated victims on scene for head injuries, lacerations, and bone fractures before loading them into waiting ambulances.

Highway police officers closed off one lane of the highway to manage incoming morning traffic and prevent secondary collisions in the low-visibility conditions. Warning flares were placed along the approach curve to alert approaching drivers to slow down.

Transport department officials noted that the section of road where the crash occurred is notorious for water pooling during heavy rainfall. Highway maintenance crews were dispatched to inspect drainage grates along the curve that appeared clogged with mud and road debris.

The van driver was detained at the scene for preliminary sobriety testing and formal questioning by traffic investigators. Police are analyzing vehicle tire tread conditions to determine whether worn tires contributed to the sudden hydroplaning event.

A tow truck cleared the overturned vehicle from the roadway around eight in the morning, allowing traffic flow to resume normally. Highway workers applied sand over oil patches left on the asphalt before fully reopening all lanes.

Medical officials at the provincial hospital reported that two passengers remain under close observation for severe injuries. Police investigators expect to finalize their technical accident report after interviewing all surviving passengers.
