Race Against Time: 23 Missing After Vietnamese Cargo Vessel Sinks Near Kagitingan Reef

SPRATLY ISLANDS — A major international search and rescue operation is underway in the West Philippine Sea after a Vietnamese cargo vessel sank near the disputed Kagitingan Reef (also known as Fiery Cross Reef or Yongshu Reef). Out of the 62 Vietnamese nationals on board, 39 have been successfully rescued, leaving 23 people missing in open waters.

The cargo vessel, identified as the Khoi Nguyen 18—a Vietnamese-registered ship measuring just less than 70 meters in length with a gross tonnage of 999 tonnes—ran into severe distress on Saturday evening.

According to reports from maritime authorities in China's southern Hainan province, a distress flare fired from the endangered vessel was first spotted shortly before 6:30 PM on Saturday, July 25, 2026 by a Chinese rescue ship, the Nanhai Jiu 115. The ship reportedly succumbed to rough sea conditions and sank shortly thereafter.

Following the initial distress signal, a coordinated maritime rescue effort was mobilized to comb the waters around the reef. As of Sunday morning, the search fleet includes six Chinese surface vessels, a rescue helicopter, and one Vietnamese vessel working together in a race against time to locate the remaining 23 missing crew members.

While 39 survivors have been pulled from the water, the window for finding the remaining sailors safely is narrowing as search teams brave unpredictable high-seas conditions. Vietnam’s Foreign Ministry has not yet issued an official comment on the sinking.

The incident took place near Kagitingan Reef, a strategic feature in the resource-rich Spratly Islands. The area is heavily contested, with overlapping territorial claims from the Philippines, Vietnam, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Brunei.

Though China has militarized and built artificial islands on the reef, it sits within the West Philippine Sea—the portion of the South China Sea falling within the Philippines' territory. Despite the tense geopolitical rivalries that frequently define the region, humanitarian maritime law has taken precedence as international crews focus entirely on saving the lives hanging in the balance.
