Quarry Disaster: At Least 7 Workers Killed, Six Injured After Massive Boulder Crushes Site

BENGALURU, India — At least seven daily-wage laborers were killed and six others severely injured on Thursday morning, July 2, 2026 after a massive boulder collapsed at a stone quarry on the outskirts of Bengaluru.

The catastrophic rock fall triggered an immediate, large-scale rescue operation as emergency personnel raced to free workers feared trapped beneath the heavy debris.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 AM at the Kaveri Jelly Crusher facility, located in the Madapattana village of Bengaluru South taluk. A group of roughly 15 to 20 laborers had just commenced their routine early-morning shift when a massive section of rock suddenly gave way.

According to local police and eyewitness reports, the boulder broke free from a height of over 40 feet, crashing directly onto the area where laborers were operating machinery and loading transport vehicles. "We heard the sound, followed by the crashing of boulders," said Gopi, a surviving quarry worker who managed to escape the impact zone in the nick of time. "In no time, the boulder fell near us. We ran for safety, but others got crushed and died. No one cautioned us about the loose boulders."

The sheer force and speed of the collapse left the workers below with virtually no time to escape. Seven laborers died on the spot from catastrophic injuries.

Emergency units, including teams from the Tavarekere Police Station and specialized rescue personnel, rushed to the cordoned-off site to launch clearance operations. Earthmovers and excavators were deployed to systematically shift the shattered rock fragments.

The tragedy has sparked sharp criticism from local authorities regarding safety standards at the site. Preliminary reports indicate the deceased were daily-wage earners who had been working at the site for over a year, living in makeshift accommodations near the crushing unit.

Government officials and police have launched a comprehensive investigation to determine if negligence or a violation of safety protocols contributed to the rock fall. The owner of the quarry has been taken into police custody for formal questioning.

State leaders have expressed profound sorrow over the deaths, reiterating that quarry operators bear a strict legal duty to safeguard the lives of their workforce, and warning that strict regulatory action will follow.
