Quake Strikes Barkhan: 3 Injured and Panic Spreads as 5.2-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Balochistan

QUETTA, PAKISTAN — A strong 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province on Saturday morning, June 27, 2026 leaving at least three people injured and sending terrified residents fleeing into the streets.

The seismic shockwave, which occurred amid heightened tectonic activity in the region, triggered structural collapses in nearby districts and prompted an immediate response from disaster management authorities.

According to data released by the National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) in Islamabad, the earthquake hit at approximately 8:36 a.m. local time, carrying a magnitude of 5.2 and originating at a depth of 19 kilometers.

The earthquake's epicenter was located roughly 58 kilometers northeast of Barkhan district, but its strong tremors shook several adjoining areas, including Kohlu, Rakhni, and Musakhel. The sudden jolts caused widespread panic across the region, forcing terrified families to quickly evacuate their homes, commercial centers, and multi-story buildings to seek refuge in open spaces.

While large-scale infrastructure across major towns withstood the shaking, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) confirmed that the earthquake caused partial collapses in more vulnerable rural zones, resulting in three reported injuries.

In the Gangri area of the neighboring Musakhel district, the roof of a local commercial establishment collapsed entirely, trapping and injuring two laborers inside. Meanwhile, in a separate structural failure in northern Gangri, a residential house belonging to a local citizen named Fazal caved in, leaving another person injured.

"Administrative officials and rescue teams reached the affected areas immediately," a PDMA representative stated. "The three injured individuals were shifted to nearby medical facilities to receive urgent treatment, and all are currently receiving necessary medical care."

Seismologists noted that the 5.2-magnitude quake was part of a rapid succession of seismic events. It was preceded just hours earlier at 6:15 a.m. by a moderate 4.3-magnitude earthquake centered in the same area, compounding the anxiety of local populations.

Due to continuous fears of subsequent aftershocks and visible cracks appearing in the walls of various mud-brick structures, a large number of local residents have chosen to abandon their homes temporarily and erect emergency tents outside.

The PDMA has directed respective district administrations to expedite local relief activities, closely monitor the situation, and conduct comprehensive surveys to evaluate any further property damage across the province.
