Pune Midnight Crash: Speeding Car Uproots Tree, Leaving 2 Injured in Suspected Drunk Driving Incident

PUNE, INDIA — A late-night joyride ended in disaster in Pune early Thursday morning, July 30, 2026 after a high-speed luxury vehicle spun violently out of control and slammed into a roadside tree. The sheer violence of the impact completely uprooted the large tree from its concrete footing on the sidewalk, leaving the vehicle completely mangled and both occupants trapped inside the wreckage.

The catastrophic collision happened during the early hours of Thursday in Pune’s Sangamwadi Parking No. 3 area. Witnesses reported hearing the deafening screech of tires followed immediately by a thunderous crash as the vehicle plowed directly onto the footpath.

The structural damage to the vehicle was severe, with the entire front end compressed into the cabin. The impact was strong enough to tear the massive tree directly out from its roots, causing it to fall completely across the sidewalk. Local residents who rushed out to the scene discovered a chaotic pile of metal and foliage, with the driver pinned tightly against the steering wheel.

Teams from the Pune Fire Brigade, led by Fire Officer Kamlesh Chowdhary, were dispatched to the scene alongside local police forces. Using specialized cutting tools, emergency personnel and nearby citizens worked meticulously to extricate the two severely pinned occupants from the crushed cabin.

While clearing the vehicle, first responders made a crucial discovery that shed immediate light on the cause of the disaster. "Prima facie, it appeared that the 20-year-old driver was drunk. There were liquor bottles found inside the car," Officer Chowdhary confirmed following the extraction. Both the driver and the secondary passenger were pulled from the wreckage with substantial injuries and rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

The Lakshmi Nagar police station has officially launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident. Blood samples have been taken from the driver to legally confirm alcohol levels while charges regarding reckless driving, endangering life, and driving under the influence are being drafted.

The uprooted tree and scattered debris caused localized traffic blockages into Thursday morning before cranes arrived to clear the road. The incident has re-ignited community fury regarding a string of high-profile speeding and drunk driving infractions across Pune, with local advocacy groups demanding stricter police checkpoints during midnight hours to prevent youth-related road tragedies.
