Powerful 7.2-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Vanuatu, Triggering Tsunami Warning

PORT VILA, Vanuatu — A powerful, shallow earthquake initially measured at magnitude 7.2 struck off the coast of Vanuatu, prompting emergency authorities and regional monitoring agencies to issue a temporary localized tsunami threat for surrounding Pacific shorelines.

The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles), centered roughly 200 kilometers (124 miles) northwest of Port-Olry on the island of Espiritu Santo. The initial shock sent strong tremors across nearby island groups.

Following the primary quake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC) issued a threat bulletin advising that hazardous tsunami waves were possible for coastal areas located within 300 kilometers of the epicenter. Vanuatu’s National Disaster Management Office and local geological hazard departments immediately advised residents along low-lying coastal zones to evacuate to higher ground as a precautionary measure.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) later revised the primary earthquake's magnitude down to 6.9, while reporting a strong secondary aftershock of magnitude 6.3 nearby. Local officials and former government representatives confirmed multiple ongoing aftershocks across the area following the main event.

After assessing real-time ocean gauge data and coastal sea-level observations, monitoring agencies confirmed that no significant tsunami waves were generated. Vanuatu authorities subsequently lifted the evacuation order and canceled the tsunami warning, advising residents that the threat to coastal zones had passed. Pacific neighbors, including Chile and the Philippines, also confirmed no tsunami risk along their coastlines.

Local authorities reported no immediate casualties or major structural damage across the archipelago. Disaster response teams continue to conduct assessments across remote northern islands to monitor for localized landslides or infrastructure impact.

Vanuatu, a Pacific island nation with a population of roughly 320,000, sits directly along the Pacific "Ring of Fire"—an arc of intense seismic and volcanic activity stretching across the Pacific basin where tectonic plate collisions frequently cause major earthquakes.
