Post Tropical Cyclone Hits US East Coast, Two Dead Under Debris, Power Cut, Roads Blocked

Norfolk, United States— A post-tropical cyclone hit the US East Coast on October 31, 2026, leaving two people dead under storm debris and triggering power cuts from Virginia to New Jersey.

The system came ashore near the Virginia-North Carolina line around 5 a.m. It was no longer a hurricane. The National Weather Service said sustained winds were 65 miles per hour. But the storm was huge. It pushed a surge of 3 to 5 feet into Chesapeake Bay. Rain fell in sheets.

Officials confirmed two fatalities by late afternoon. One man in Virginia Beach was killed when a tree crashed through his garage while he was clearing debris. A woman in coastal Maryland died when a wall of a shed collapsed on her. Both deaths were caused by storm debris. County sheriffs said both calls came during the worst of the wind.

In Norfolk, water covered downtown streets. Cars stalled. A city bus was stuck at a flooded intersection. Power lines snapped. Dominion Energy said more than 80,000 customers lost power in Virginia alone. Crews could not work until gusts dropped below 35 miles per hour.

Further north, New Jersey saw street flooding and beach erosion. In Atlantic City, the boardwalk was closed after planks were torn loose. In Ocean City, Maryland, waves broke over dunes and flooded Route 1. Police closed the road. Businesses sandbagged doors.

Airports felt it. Norfolk, Richmond and Baltimore reported dozens of cancellations. Amtrak suspended service on parts of the Northeast Corridor due to downed trees on tracks. School districts from Virginia Beach to Wilmington closed.

The Weather Service said the cyclone had transitioned after moving over cooler water but still packed tropical moisture. It warned of 4 to 8 inches of rain inland, with flash flood risk in the Appalachian foothills. Tornado watches were posted for eastern North Carolina.

Governors of Virginia and Maryland declared a state of emergency to free up National Guard trucks. Those trucks were used to clear roads. In some neighborhoods, residents were told to stay inside because live wires were down under piles of leaves and branches.

By evening, the center was moving over Delaware and weakening. Rain was easing at the coast but rising inland. Debris removal was just starting. Power companies said restoration would take into tomorrow.
