Pope Leo XIV spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Oct. 16, while recovering in Rome’s Gemelli Hospital from lung cancer surgery. The Vatican said Leo voiced deep concern about Oleshky’s grave humanitarian situation. He called for a ceasefire to allow food and medical aid deliveries, plus the safe, voluntary evacuation of civilians. More than 6,000 residents, including about 200 children, remain in the area, according to Ukrainian religious leaders. The Kremlin says Putin agreed to cooperate on humanitarian aid.
