Pope Leo Continues Anti-AI Crusade, Says Tech Weakens Human 'Creativity and Judgment'

Pope Leo XIV voiced his ongoing concerns regarding artificial intelligence (AI) through a series of tweets. He warned that the rapid advancements in technology, while potentially beneficial, pose significant risks to human creativity and judgment. “AI can be a valuable tool and, at the same time, it calls for a measured and vigilant approach,” he articulated.

The Pope stressed that the convenience offered by AI could foster an excessive reliance on technology, leading to a diminished capacity for personal creativity. He remarked that the apparent objectivity of AI responses can obscure the cultural biases embedded within these systems, echoing broader concerns from various anti-AI advocates about how personal beliefs influence technology.

Further, Pope Leo acknowledged that AI's ability to simulate human interaction—be it through advice, empathy, or love—could create misleading engagements. “In contexts where real relationships and emotional bonds are lacking, the danger is that a person may lose the desire to form genuine human connections,” he noted.

His comments follow the publication of an extensive 42,300-word open letter that underscores the imperative for regulatory frameworks governing AI technology. The Pope urged that these regulations must focus on protecting workers displaced by automation, educating youth on responsible AI use, and shielding children from harmful content generated by AI systems.

In one of his tweets, he elaborated on the essential differences between human experiences and artificial intelligence's capabilities, stating, “Artificial intelligences do not undergo experiences, do not possess a body, do not feel joy or pain…Nor do they have a moral conscience.” He emphasized that while AI can imitate human behavior, it cannot genuinely understand or empathize, which is crucial for authentic human engagement.

The Vatican's initiatives also include the establishment of a commission to discuss the challenges posed by AI, reinforcing Pope Leo’s commitment to contribute to the ethical discourse surrounding technology.
