Politeness Goes Viral: Bill Ackman’s Old-School Dating Tip Draws Heat

Bill Ackman, billionaire hedge-fund manager and prominent political donor, recently offered a dose of old-school dating advice — and social media responded with a roar of mockery. His guidance? Simply walk up and say: “May I meet you?” Ackman claims that this polite, politely phrased line “almost never” got him rejected when he was younger.

In a post on his social platform, Ackman painted a picture of a world where spontaneous, in-person interactions are fading. He argued that modern “online culture” makes it hard for people to meet in real life. His solution: a courteous, grammatically correct approach rooted in respect. He credited that combination for his success — or at least, for sparking interesting conversations.

He framed his tip as a humble offering, signing off with “just two cents from an older, happily married guy concerned about our next generation’s happiness and population replacement rates.” It was mentorship, or so he thought — a small help for those trying to navigate a confusing, often alienating dating world.

The internet, unsurprisingly, did not keep the seriousness. Within hours, the phrase became a meme. People paired it with awkward party photos, strangely situated subway scenes, and awkward first-date rejections. Critics didn’t hold back. Some argued that the line only “worked” for Ackman because he’s tall, wealthy, and powerful — a context that ordinary young men do not share.

Others pointed out how out of touch the advice felt, noting that in today’s world, bold but awkward politeness sometimes comes off as detached or even creepy. Some Gen Z voices added more nuance: they saw his advice not as elegant but as rigid, arguing that a line like “can I talk to you?” might feel more natural in real life. Those defenders, though, also admitted something: Ackman’s simplicity touched on a real pain point — isolation and the fear of rejection.

Ackman replied to some of the jabs. When one person said they tried the line and got rejected, he responded with encouragement: “Try again. You need not fear being rejected. Wrong girl for you. Her loss, your gain.” He also noted that he didn’t always have wealth when he used that line — implying it was a lesson in persistence, not privilege.

Beneath the humor and the memes, the moment raises a serious question: how do people learn to connect in an age where app culture rules? For a man who built his fortune in finance, Ackman’s answer was surprisingly tender. But for many, the generational dissonance was impossible to ignore. A four-word phrase drew laughs and eye rolls, but it also sparked a wider conversation about loneliness, confidence, and the value of genuine, face-to-face connection.
