Warsaw, Poland— The minivan entered the crossing at 11:17 a.m. The freight train hit it at full line speed. Four people inside the minivan died on impact, police said, and the wreckage was thrown more than thirty meters down the track.
It happened on a manned crossing outside a county road junction that locals use daily. Barriers were down, according to early reports. Or they were late. Accounts differ. That difference is now the center of the case file.
PAP reported that the locomotive driver had no time to brake. He sounded the horn. He applied emergency brakes. The distance was not enough. The train, hauling bulk containers, stopped almost 600 meters past the point of collision. The minivan was unrecognizable.
"There are four fatalities, confirmed at the scene," a district police spokesperson said. "No train crew injuries. We are securing video from the crossing camera and the locomotive. A prosecutor is on site."
PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe sent its own inspection team. They took the crossing relay logs and the barrier motor. A railway technician who asked not to be named said the crossing had two fault reports this month for delayed lowering.
The victims were all adults from the same district, returning from a market run, according to local authorities. Names have not been released pending family notification. A priest arrived at the cordon at noon and was allowed through.
This stretch of track has seen three crossing incidents since 2022. None were fatal until now. Local mayors have complained for years about visibility and signal timing on secondary roads. Funding went to main corridors.
Traffic on the line was shut for five hours. Passenger delays rippled into Łódź and Warsaw. Rail workers cleared debris with a crane while investigators chalked the road. The minivan's license plate was found in a ditch.
Polish law requires a full technical report within thirty days. The prosecutor said negligence has not been ruled out. The barriers are being tested tonight.
