Pipeline Blast in Eastern Nigeria: Eight Dead, Dozens Injured as Gas Leak Ignites Chaos

Port Harcourt, Nigeria— The pipeline went at 06:42. A low pressure hiss turned into a fireball that ripped through a settlement on the edge of the right-of-way, killing eight and burning more than twenty others before sunrise.

The blast hit a community that lives too close to infrastructure that was never meant to have neighbors. Houses built from sheet metal and concrete block sit within fifty meters of the line. Residents said they smelled gas for two nights. They called. No one came.

Vanguard staff on the ground reported flames shooting forty feet high. By 8 a.m., the National Emergency Management Agency had cordoned off a half-kilometer radius. The fire kept burning. It fed off residual pressure in the line and thick brush soaked in condensate.

"We recovered eight bodies, all adult males, near the point of rupture," a senior official with the State Emergency Management Agency said. "The injured were evacuated to two facilities in Owerri and Port Harcourt. Several have 70 percent burns. The number will change."

The operator, still unnamed in official briefings, shut in the section by mid-morning. Pressure logs and weld inspection reports from the last quarter are now with investigators. A field supervisor who spoke on condition of anonymity said the segment was flagged for corrosion in March.

People here know this script. Pipeline jobs get outsourced. Maintenance gets delayed. Communities get told to stay clear, then get blamed for encroachment when the line fails. The village head said his council wrote three letters this year about the smell.

Security forces blocked access roads to keep crowds back and to keep cameras out. Journalists were held at a checkpoint for ninety minutes while a company team entered with hard hats and no press liaison. That tells you where the priorities sit.

The health ministry issued a call for blood. Hospitals reported shortages of burn dressings by noon. Families lined the corridor at the Federal Medical Centre asking for names. There was no list.

The fire was out by 14:30. The crater remained. Officials said air quality readings were still hazardous. No arrest, no cause determination, no timeline for compensation has been announced.
