Residents of Piddington, an Oxfordshire village near Bicester, voted overwhelmingly in a symbolic referendum to leave the United Kingdom. Of 312 ballots cast, 285 supported independence, 26 opposed it, and one was spoiled. The vote was organised in response to Home Office plans to accommodate up to 1,256 male asylum seekers at a nearby former Ministry of Defence site. The referendum has no legal effect, but parish leaders say it sends a strong message about local concerns and democratic participation.
