MANILA, Philippine - The Philippines has strongly rejected China’s claims that recent incidents in the West Philippine Sea were the result of so-called “staged provocations,” calling the remarks misleading and an attempt to divert attention from ongoing tensions in the disputed waters.
Philippine officials said China’s statements distort the facts on the ground and undermine international law, particularly the 2016 arbitral ruling that invalidated Beijing’s expansive claims over most of the South China Sea. Manila maintained that its maritime activities are lawful, transparent, and conducted within areas clearly recognized as part of the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.
According to the Philippine government, Chinese vessels have repeatedly engaged in dangerous maneuvers, harassment, and the use of water cannons against Filipino ships, including those on resupply and patrol missions. Officials stressed that these actions, not Philippine operations, are the real source of instability in the region.
Manila also reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful dialogue while emphasizing that it will continue to assert its sovereign rights and protect its fishermen and maritime personnel. The Philippines called on China to respect international law, avoid escalation, and adhere to diplomatic mechanisms for resolving disputes.
