Huaraz, Peru—A passenger bus plunged hundreds of feet into a ravine early this morning, resulting in at least ten fatalities. The bus was navigating a narrow, unpaved mountain highway in the Ancash region when it reportedly slipped off the shoulder. Rescue crews arrived on the scene to find the vehicle completely crushed at the base of the canyon. The difficult terrain prevented immediate access to the wreckage for several hours.

Local police and volunteer firefighters have spent the day recovering bodies from the debris. The bus was carrying approximately twenty-five passengers, most of whom were traveling to markets in the valley. Twelve survivors have been pulled from the wreckage and are receiving care at the regional hospital in Huaraz. Many are in critical condition, and doctors expect the death toll to rise by tomorrow morning.

The driver of the bus is among those who survived the initial impact. He is currently being guarded by police at the hospital while investigators wait to question him. Initial statements from witnesses on board suggest a mechanical failure in the steering column occurred right before the bus veered off the road. The transport company, which operates this line, is facing intense scrutiny over its maintenance history.

The road where the crash occurred is poorly maintained and lacks guardrails in most sections. Drivers are forced to navigate sharp bends with little room for error. This incident has reignited the long-standing debate over transit safety in the rural provinces. The governor of Ancash has demanded an emergency audit of all commercial vehicles traveling through the mountain passes.

Families of the passengers gathered at the site throughout the afternoon, hindered by the lack of information from the authorities. The local morgue is currently overwhelmed by the number of victims. The process of identifying the remains is moving slowly due to the state of the wreckage. Officials have requested additional forensic support from the capital.

Work at the site will pause for the night as the terrain becomes too dangerous for rescue teams to continue. They plan to use heavy cranes tomorrow to pull the bus chassis from the bottom of the ravine. This will hopefully allow them to locate any remaining victims who may still be trapped underneath the hull.
