People allowed back home in southwestern France as fire weakens

People evacuated by a major wildfire in southwestern France have been gradually allowed back home as authorities said the fire is contained. French officials ended evacuation orders for 12 districts west and southwest of Bordeaux, allowing about 144,000 people to return from more than 220,000 initially displaced. The Gironde prefecture said conditions improved overnight, with falling temperatures and higher humidity helping limit the blaze’s spread. The A63 highway linking Bordeaux to the Spanish border reopened, but access to Cap Ferret remained closed.
