Austin, United States— A pedestrian was struck and killed Wednesday in a high-speed collision that shut down a major road for hours, the Traffic Safety Bureau confirmed. The driver remained at the scene.
The crash happened just after 2 p.m. on a four-lane arterial with a posted 35 mph limit. Investigators said the vehicle was traveling well above that when it hit a person crossing mid-block. The impact threw the victim more than 20 feet.
Officers from the traffic homicide unit arrived within 10 minutes. They found the pedestrian down in the right lane. Paramedics pronounced the person dead at the scene. Police have not released name, age or gender pending family notification.
The driver, a man in his 30s, told officers he did not see the pedestrian until the last second. He showed no signs of impairment in a field test. A breath sample was taken as routine. The vehicle, a sedan, had heavy front-end damage and a shattered windshield.
The Traffic Safety Bureau said the section of road has no crosswalk for 400 meters. Residents have complained for months about speeding. City engineers had planned to add a pedestrian island next quarter. That plan is now under review.
Crash reconstruction teams measured skid marks and scanned the scene with LiDAR. They documented 80 meters of post-impact braking. The speed limit signs were photographed and the traffic signal timing pulled from the city system.
Witnesses said traffic was light and the sedan passed them quickly. One driver said he heard a loud thud and saw debris in the air. Another stopped and called 911 after seeing the body in the road.
The bureau said pedestrian deaths involving high speed have risen this year. National data shows a sharp increase in after-dark fatalities on multi-lane roads without lighting. Officers will check whether streetlights were working at the time.
The roadway reopened after 6 p.m. after the body was removed and debris cleared. Police said charges have not been filed and the case remains open pending a full reconstruction report.
