Pedestrian Killed And Driver Critical After Nighttime Hit-And-Run Horror In Dublin, Gardai Hunt Suspect

Dublin, Ireland— A pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene on Camden Street shortly after 11:30 p.m. Friday after a car mounted the pavement and struck him before speeding off. Gardai said the vehicle crashed 200 meters later into a bollard, leaving its driver critically injured. The street was sealed off for hours while forensic teams worked.

The pedestrian, a man in his early 40s, was walking alone toward Harcourt Street when the car hit him. Witnesses said the vehicle was traveling fast and showed no sign of braking. The impact threw the man against a shop front. Bystanders attempted CPR until paramedics arrived. He was pronounced dead at 11:52 p.m.

The driver did not stop. The car, a black Audi A4, continued down Camden Street before losing control near the junction with Pleasants Street. It hit a concrete bollard and spun. Fire crews had to cut the driver, a man in his late 20s, from the wreckage. He was taken to St James's Hospital with critical head and chest injuries and remains under Garda guard.

"This was a reckless act that cost a life, we need witnesses to come forward," a Garda traffic sergeant at the scene said. He said CCTV from three pubs and a takeaway shows the Audi swerving before the collision. The car's registration has been confirmed and its owner identified. Alcohol and speed are being examined as factors.

Gardai closed Camden Street between Camden Place and Charlotte Way until 4 a.m. Forensic collision investigators marked tyre marks and photographed blood and debris spread across 60 meters. The pedestrian's body remained under a white tent while a Garda photographer documented the scene. His family has been notified.

Locals said the street was busy at the time with weekend crowds leaving pubs. One barman said he heard a loud bang and saw people screaming. Another witness said the Audi had been driving erratically two minutes earlier near Wexford Street. Gardai are checking whether the driver had been involved in an earlier altercation.

The road is known for late-night speeding despite a 30 km/h limit. Dublin City Council said it installed speed cushions and additional lighting there in March. Residents have complained for months about cars racing after midnight. A council spokesperson said traffic calming will be reviewed again next week.

Gardai are appealing for dashcam footage from Camden Street between 11:00 p.m. and midnight and for anyone who saw the Audi before the crash. The pedestrian will be taken to the mortuary for a post-mortem. The investigation remains open, with a file to be prepared for the coroner.
