Stockport, United Kingdom— A pedestrian died on the A6 in Stockport shortly after 7 p.m. on October 30, 2026 after being hit by a double-decker bus near a busy junction.
The collision happened near Heaton Moor. The bus was on a scheduled route heading into Stockport town center. Police said the pedestrian was crossing the road when he was struck. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
The bus stopped immediately. The driver remained on site and cooperated with officers. No passengers on the bus were reported injured. The bus sustained damage to its front windshield.
Greater Manchester Police closed the A6 in both directions between two intersections. Traffic was diverted through side streets. Queues built up for more than a mile. The closure lasted over four hours.
"We are appealing for anyone who saw the incident to contact us," a GMP spokesperson said. "Dashcam footage from drivers on the A6 at that time would help us understand what happened."
Forensic collision investigators examined the scene under floodlights. They measured skid marks and the bus's stopping distance. The pedestrian's belongings were collected as evidence. The road surface was wet from earlier rain.
Bus company Stagecoach said the driver had been taken off duty and would be offered support. The company said it was working with police and had provided CCTV from the bus. The footage had not been released.
Residents said that stretch of the A6 is difficult to cross at night. There is a pedestrian crossing 100 meters north, but many people cross mid-block. One shopkeeper said buses move fast along that straight section.
The identity of the victim had not been released late Thursday. Police said next of kin were being traced. The coroner was notified.
The A6 reopened just after 11 p.m. Police said the investigation file would be passed to the coroner and the bus operator's safety team.
