Limerick, Ireland— A pedestrian was struck and seriously injured by a vehicle on the Dublin Road in Limerick on October 22, 2026.
The collision happened at 7:55 a.m. near the Groody roundabout, a busy dual carriageway used by commuters heading into the city. The pedestrian, a man in his 50s, was crossing from a bus stop toward a housing estate when a car in the outside lane hit him. He was thrown several meters and landed on the central reservation.
The driver, a woman in her 30s, stopped immediately and called emergency services. Other motorists blocked the lane with their cars and placed high-visibility vests over the injured man to keep him warm. Blood pooled on the asphalt.
Gardaí, fire and ambulance crews arrived within 10 minutes. They found the man conscious but with severe injuries to head, chest and leg. Paramedics stabilized him on the road and took him to University Hospital Limerick. Doctors listed him as serious but stable in intensive care.
“The pedestrian was not at a marked crossing. The car had little time to react. It was dark and wet, visibility was poor,” said a Garda roads policing spokesman. The driver was breath-tested at the scene with negative result and taken for questioning as routine.
The Dublin Road was closed inbound for over two hours for forensic examination. Forensic collision investigators measured skid marks, checked lighting and dashcam footage from vehicles behind. Traffic was diverted through Castletroy and Annacotty, causing heavy delays.
Residents said the stretch is dangerous for pedestrians due to fast traffic and few crossings. A local councillor said, “People have to dash across four lanes to get to the bus. We have asked for a pedestrian crossing for two years.”
Gardaí have appealed for witnesses, particularly anyone with dashcam who was on Dublin Road between 7:40 and 8 a.m. The driver’s car has been seized for technical examination.
The investigation remains open. The road reopened before 10:30 a.m.
