Paris Public Prosecutor Opens Judicial Investigation into Elon Musk and X

As of May 7, 2026, the Paris public prosecutor’s office has formally launched a judicial investigation into Elon Musk and his social media platform, X. This investigation stems from allegations of misconduct involving X's algorithms and their potential role in disseminating harmful content, including child sexual abuse material and deepfake images.

The inquiry was initiated after a complaint was filed by a French lawmaker in January 2025, which claimed that X's algorithms had been manipulated to influence public content and that users were improperly extracting data. Following an expanding probe, French prosecutors are also looking into the role of X's AI chatbot, Grok, which has been accused of generating non-consensual sexual deepfakes and promoting harmful narratives.

In February 2026, the cybercrime unit raided X’s Paris office, seizing evidence linked to these allegations. Prosecutors have summoned Musk and Linda Yaccarino, the former CEO of X, for voluntary interviews as part of the investigation. Although attendance at these interviews is not mandatory, authorities noted that their absence would not impede the investigation.

Musk has publicly criticized the investigation, calling it a "politically motivated criminal probe." His response echoes the sentiments of other tech leaders, who argue that European regulators are unfairly targeting American companies through excessive legal scrutiny.

The allegations against X include serious charges such as complicity in the possession and distribution of offensive images, denial of crimes against humanity, and manipulation of automated data processing systems. As the investigation progresses, French prosecutors are ensuring cooperation with other international legal bodies, potentially complicating Musk's operations in Europe.

With scrutiny increasing on tech platforms, this investigation could set significant precedents for the accountability of major social media companies in handling sensitive content and data privacy. The outcomes will be closely watched as they might influence regulations globally and affect the operational standards of social media under Musk's management.
