Panic at Maharashtra Station: Passenger Train Halted After Brake Pad Catches Fire

MAHARASHTA - A wave of panic hit passengers at a local railway station in Maharashtra early on Sunday morning, August 30, 2026 after a passenger train was abruptly brought to a halt when one of its brake pads caught fire. Dense smoke rising from beneath the train coaches prompted immediate emergency action from railway officials and alert train crew members.

The incident occurred as the train was approaching the platform. Witnesses reported seeing thick grey smoke and visible sparks emanating from the undercarriage of one of the middle coaches. As the smell of burning rubber and metal filled the air, alarmed commuters inside the carriages quickly alerted the onboard staff and pulled the emergency chain to stop the train.

Prompt action by the loco pilot and guard ensured the train was brought to a safe, controlled stop right at the station platform, preventing any potential derailment or further structural damage.

Railway personnel and station authorities acted swiftly, rushing to the affected coach with portable fire extinguishers. The station master immediately isolated the affected track line and cut power to nearby overhead cables as a safety precaution while teams worked to douse the flames.

Emergency responders managed to put out the blaze within minutes. Initial technical inspections revealed that friction binding—caused by a jammed or overheating brake shoe assembly—was the primary cause of the ignition.

All passengers were safely evacuated from the affected coaches without any reported injuries or casualties. Commuters praise the rapid response of the station staff and emergency teams, who managed to prevent what, could have been a far worse disaster.

After the faulty brake assembly was isolated and mechanical teams completed a comprehensive safety check of the undercarriage, the train was cleared to resume its journey with a delay. Railway authorities have ordered a formal technical review to investigate the brake system failure and ensure maintenance standards are strictly maintained.
